Facade decor elements and functions

Facade decor is a system of elements that define clean building geometry, protect vulnerable facade areas from water and cracks, and help highlight windows and the entrance.

Facade decor elements

• Corner decor: protects external corners and reinforces geometry.
• Keystone: accent in the upper part of a window or arch, completes the composition.
• Console: support and decorative element under cornices and bands.
• Column cap: finishes columns and piers, protects from moisture.
• Molding: thin profile for separating planes and masking joints.
• Window cornice: top trim above the window, protects reveals and frames the opening.
• Pilaster: vertical facade element, emphasizes axes and openings.
• Sill cornice: lower window element with drip edge, closes ends and reveal joints.
• Band cornice: horizontal band, divides the facade by floors and sets rhythm.
• Plinth cornice: transition between wall and plinth, protects the area from splashes.

Functions (corners, windows, cornices)

• Corners (corner decor, pilaster): cover vulnerable areas, prevent chips, visually assemble volumes.
• Windows (window cornice, sill cornice, keystone, molding): align opening geometry, mask reveal irregularities, improve joint durability and water drainage.
• Facade cornice (band, plinth with console): completes the facade and bands, protects junctions, improves water drainage, and creates architectural shadow.
• Additionally (column cap): protects the top of columns and piers and completes the composition.

Where to use (house, plinth, windows)

• Private house: form a clean line with band cornices, reinforce corner decor and pilasters.
• Plinth: plinth cornice and drip edges for water drainage and joint protection.
• Windows & doors: window and sill cornices, keystone, molding — a fast way to enhance the facade without wet plaster decor.
